Hole In The Rock

Hole-in-the-Rock isn't just a trail, it's a journey through one of the most incredible chapters of Utah history.

In 1879, a group of Mormon pioneers set out from Escalante, Utah, determined to establish settlements in southeastern Utah. Their route led them across some of the most rugged and unforgiving terrain in the West. When they reached the sheer cliffs overlooking the Colorado River, they found what seemed impossible: a narrow crack in the rock. Over six weeks, they blasted, chiseled, and carved that crevice into a passage wide enough for wagons. The route became known as Hole-in-the-Rock.

Today, the trail follows much of the same path those pioneers traveled. The route winds through stunning slickrock landscapes, deep canyons, colorful sandstone formations, and some of the most remote country in Utah. Along the way you'll find historic pioneer sites, breathtaking overlooks, and iconic destinations such as Dance Hall Rock, Devil's Garden, and the famous Hole-in-the-Rock overlook itself.

What was once a six-month struggle for survival is now one of Utah's premier overlanding adventures. It's a trip that combines history, rugged off-road travel, spectacular scenery, and a healthy reminder that modern inconveniences are pretty minor compared to lowering wagons down a cliff with ropes.
